A Pirate’s Life for Me: Kicking Off the Disney Virtual 5K Series

Ahoy, mateys! Today, I laced up my running shoes, donned my best pirate attire, and set sail—err, set foot—on the first race of runDisney’s Summer Virtual 5K Series! This month’s theme? Pirates of the Caribbean. And what better way to celebrate than by taking to the streets of my neighborhood dressed as a swashbuckling rogue?

If you know me, you know that costumes and running go hand in hand. During Covid virtual races were my only option, I ran as a slice of bacon

a pumpkin spice latte

and even in medical scrubs to honor my mom on Nurse’s Day. So, when my neighbors saw me today, pirate ears and all, I’m sure they just nodded and thought, Yep, that makes sense.

The runDisney Virtual Running Series features three themed 5Ks, one for each summer month—June, July, and August. You can register for individual races ($58 each) or go for the full Challenge ($180), which includes all three races, an extra challenge medal, and some fun bonus goodies. If you’ve ever wanted to experience the magic of a Disney race but can’t justify the cost or travel of an in-person event, this is a fantastic way to join in the fun from anywhere!

I wish I could say they’re still available to register, however they had such great themes that they sold out fairly quickly. Future virtual races can be found here: runDisney Virtual Running Series

This year’s race series supports FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a global nonprofit dedicated to preparing young minds for the future through robotics and STEM programs. It’s always great to know that these miles (and my slightly ridiculous costumes) are supporting a worthy cause.

If you want to see this pirate in action, you can watch my full Pirates of the Caribbean 5K on my YouTube channel, click here for video From the pre-race costume check to the post-race medal reveal, I’m sharing all the fun (and probably some out-of-breath pirate puns). Check it out and don’t forget to subscribe for more race day adventures!

With my pirate adventure complete, I’m already looking ahead to the next two races in the series. What will July and August bring? And, more importantly, what costume will I wear next? Stay tuned!

Are you running this summer’s runDisney Virtual 5K Series? Drop a comment and let me know! And if you’re on the fence—just remember, the best part of virtual races is that you can run them your way. Costumes optional…but highly encouraged.

Why I Love to Run

Running is more than just exercise; it’s a way of life. It’s my sanctuary, my therapy, and my greatest adventure. When I lace up my shoes and hit the pavement, I am reminded of all the reasons I love to run.

I Run...

·       to Clear My Mind
Life is full of distractions and noise. Running gives me the space to think, to process, and sometimes to escape. Whether I’m working through a problem or simply enjoying the rhythm of my feet hitting the ground, running provides the mental clarity I crave.

·       for My Health
The physical benefits of running are undeniable. It keeps my heart strong, my body agile, and my energy levels high. But beyond the physical, it also strengthens my mental resilience. The feeling of accomplishment after a long run reminds me that I am capable of pushing through any challenge.

·       for the Sense of Freedom
There’s something liberating about running. It requires no special equipment, no fancy memberships—just me and the open road. Whether I’m exploring a new trail or running through familiar streets, the sense of freedom that comes with each stride is unmatched.

·       to Connect
Running connects me to nature, to my surroundings, and to a community of fellow runners. Whether I’m running solo at sunrise or participating in a local race, I feel part of something bigger. The camaraderie among runners is something truly special.

·       for the Challenge
Every run is a test—of endurance, of discipline, of willpower. Some days are easier than others, but every step forward is a victory. Whether it’s setting a new personal record or simply finishing a run I didn’t feel like starting, I embrace the challenge.

·       because It Brings Me Joy
At the end of the day, I run because it makes me happy. The rush of endorphins, the sense of accomplishment, the pure joy of movement—it all keeps me coming back for more.

So, why do I love to run? Because it reminds me of what I’m capable of. Because it keeps me grounded and lifts me up at the same time. Because it makes me feel alive.

Why do you run?
